Since I began taking photos, I have been a huge fan of Photoshop. However, I will admit that it is probably my most despised program on my computer. I can’t really put a finger on why that is, but there are a lot of minor irritations that add up. In fact, among all the issues I’ve listed here, the biggest problem I have with Photoshop is that “I don’t understand what is going on.” Case in point, there’s a new, exciting topic out there called artificial intelligence and machine learning. I don’t understand what is special about being able to train an algorithm, so that it can then work as quickly and efficiently as Photoshop with regard to creating stunning outputs. This is the question that haunts me when I work with Photoshop. Sure, I can boost some settings from 60fps to 144, but I have no idea what that means. And it doesn’t really matter for me currently, but it is a good example of how Photoshop is getting more and more complicated with every new version. For example, I don’t understand how the organization of a library is connected to the order of layers on my canvas. There are other little irritating issues, such as the fact that I can’t disable the keyboard shortcuts of the canvas in the above menu. I guess I can use the Customize drop-down menu? I don’t understand most of the menus and don’t know how to use the ones that I do understand. These are small things, but they become huge pains when there are hundreds of them. For instance, I am a fan of keyboard shortcuts. I don’t have to spend hours memorizing such things as Cut, Copy, Paste, and Paste Special. I can mute the selected document, send it to the Trash, go to File>Export as PDF, use a Custom Stroke, and so on. And I still don’t know what that “Save in a New Folder” command does. Honestly, it could be the case that I should never go back to Photoshop. There is just so much to learn and understanding Photoshop’s massive feature set is just, well, not entirely doable most of the time.
