Nick Clegg is to become the leader of the Lib Dems in a move that will almost certainly split the party.
The deputy prime minister is the party’s new leader and prime minister in waiting after hours of talks with his party’s elected MPs and candidates.
Mr Clegg said he would focus on the economy and cutting the cost of living.
But the result, announced at a glittering party conference in Glasgow, will likely see the party split in two with new factions emerging.
Mr Clegg, who is stepping down as party leader as soon as the result is in, told a cheering audience he was going to “rally the troops” in the coming weeks, insisting that it was too early to start talking about the bigger prize of the next election, due in 2015.

And today is the moment the party’s leadership selection was won – by Mr Clegg. Remarkably, in a clear sign of how the main Westminster parties are becoming ever more split along the lines of their London and Scottish wings, the main event was set to be a packed-out party conference
