the new waves system started with the l1 ultramaximizer. although i knew about this plugin, i had no idea how good it was until i used it on our guitarist, eddie kramer. eddie has one of the finest clean guitars i’ve ever heard. when i first used the ultramaximizer on his guitar, i had no idea how amazing it was to hear the guitar clean like this. seeing the feedback from eddie was just as satisfying as it sounds and it was apparent right away that this really had a dramatic effect on his guitar tone.
next, we listened to a clip from a major label recording. the guitarist’s tone on this track was terrible in the mix. i used the u5 filter and eq setting, and the guitar responded really well. we knew it was time to make a plugin that would completely change the way people think about guitar tones. we also wanted a powerful effect that sounded different from other effects in the mix so that the guitar wouldn’t compete with the rest of the instruments.
the first version of the guitar chain filter sounded good and sounded different. with the release of the first version, we were able to talk to a few major label recording engineers. there was instant enthusiasm for the sound of this new plug-in and the comments were enough to make us excited about what might be possible. one engineer in particular made it clear that we had made a huge difference for him, calling it “a big step up from other guitar processors”.
the first reaction from eddie when i played him the first version was: “this is sick, eddie. i love it.” then, we decided to make it even better. this took the next few months of intense work. this new version went through many incarnations. i have little doubt that this plug-in is the one that i am most proud of, because it represents my very best work, my highest aspiration in terms of sound quality. the natural sound of this is what i’ve always known how to achieve on a guitar. the clean sound is warm and natural; it’s not too bright or sterile. it’s not hyper-sounding, but clear and natural. the l1 is a great tool to give you the freedom to shape the guitar like no other effects.
